Summer Institute for Latino Public Policy (SILPP), Summer 2011

Magali Sánchez-Hall and José del Real, both Chicana/o Studies majors, were nominated to participate in the Summer Institute for Latino Public Policy (SILPP). This program was established in 1986 as an educational program for junior and senior undergraduate students enrolled in Inter-University Program for Latino Research (IUPLR) member institutions that combine technical and practical experience in public policy and leadership training. Every year, 30 young scholars convene in Washington, D. C. for an intense week of training and orientation to public policy and legislative processes through a series of seminars, workshops, site visits to national organizations and meetings with Congressional representatives.

Magali and José were able to learn about and understand public policy issues confronting Latinos in the U. S. They met national leaders who advocate at the national level for education, health care, housing, environmental and other issues of importance to the community. They also experienced first-hand the public policy process through personal contact with public policy decision makers, developed an appreciation for the legislative process, and presented findings of an in-depth research project in current public policy issues.

Congratulations to Magali and José.
