Graduate Division Doctoral Hooding Ceremony

The 2024 Doctoral Hooding Ceremony will be held in Royce Hall Auditorium on June 13, 2024. This is the official ceremony for the award of the doctoral degree.

Graduates are welcome and encouraged to attend both this ceremony and the one conducted by their department or school. More information on the Chicana/o Studies department ceremony can be found here.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible to participate in UCLA’s Doctoral Hooding Ceremony you must meet the following criteria:

  • You must have filed a doctoral dissertation approved by the Division of Graduate Education during the Summer 2023, Fall 2023, or Winter 2024 term OR you must file a doctoral dissertation approved by the Division of Graduate Education during the Spring 2024 term on or before Monday, June 3, 2024, by no later than 5 p.m. PDT. For information on filing: filing your doctoral dissertation.
  • In order to participate in the doctoral hooding ceremony, you must be a doctoral graduate.  Master’s students should contact their department regarding commencement ceremonies.

Regalia

Graduates are responsible for renting OR purchasing their own capgown and hood for the ceremony. Ordering can be completed through Graduation, Et Cetera. Questions should be directed to Graduation, Et Cetera (A-Level of Ackerman Union, 310- 825-2587).

  • The rental regalia is a standard black gown, flat cap, and blue hood.
  • Graduate rental regalia ordering begins on April 8, 2024.
  • TIME SENSITIVE NOTE:  For those graduates who wish to order fine regalia that is specific to UCLA (blue gown, tam and tassel that is custom sized), regalia must be purchased no later than April 12, 2024, as delivery takes approximately 8 weeks.  Any questions?  Contact Graduation, Et Cetera.

Departmental Doctoral Hooding Ceremony

The Department Ceremony will be held in the Grand Horizon Ballroom in Covel Commons on Saturday, June 15th, 2024 from 10:00 am -12:00 pm. Doors will open at 9:00 am. This is the only graduation ceremony at which you’ll be individually recognized. Ph.D. graduates and their guest are invited to attend the Doctoral Hooding Reception at Covel Commons from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. 

Respond to email from Student Affairs Officer to confirm departmental doctoral hooding ceremony

Each student is given four complimentary tickets for the César E. Chávez Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies Ceremony.  An additional four tickets per student are available at $20.00/each.  You will also have the option to be wait-listed for two additional tickets.  The actual number of additional tickets beyond these 10, if any, will not be known until after the initial requests have been processed.  Tickets are ordered through MyUCLA for college and departmental graduation ceremonies.  For additional information on how to order tickets visit the College Commencement Website.

Order tickets for your guests ONLY – you do not need a ticket for yourself.  It is mandatory that each of  your guests have a ticket in hand for our ceremony.

Depending on how many tickets are ordered by all students, there may be extras available.  If you would like additional tickets to the ceremony, e-mail janeth@chavez.ucla.edu with your name, I.D.# and the number of EXTRA tickets you need (outside of what is ordered online).

Parking passes are available for purchase from the Parking Office prior to or on the day of the event

Students or guests with disabilities should contact the Office of Students with Disabilities;  (310) 825-1501 voice; (310) 206-6083 TDD, after May 3rd to receive information about parking and other assistance.

You need to arrive by 9:00 a.m.  The ceremony will start promptly at 10:00 a.m.

Graduates will be asked to sit together in a separate section. 

After your name is announced, you will walk across the stage toward the Department Chair, shake the faculty’s hand, then walk to the microphone and say a few words (no longer than 30 seconds) and return to your seat.

Students will take a group picture with their fellow graduates. Ph.D. graduates are invited to attend the Doctoral Hooding Reception at Covel Commons from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m.
