The César E. Chávez Department of Chicana/o and Central American Studies stands with the victims, families, and communities in Atlanta affected by the mass shooting on Tuesday, March 16. The shootings claimed the lives of eight individuals, six of them women. We would like to express our deepest sympathies to everyone impacted by this tragedy. The CCAS department recognizes that AAPI communities are under attack and will continue to stand in solidarity with UCLA’s AAPI students, faculty, staff, and community.

We condemn the racist and misogynist murderous violence we witnessed this week in Georgia, as well as the increasing hate crimes directed against Asians and Asian Americans. As a department, we join our Asian American brothers, sisters, and siblings in the naming of the systems of white supremacy, settler colonialism, imperialism, and heteropatriarchy that made them targets, and we commit to continuing to conduct research and teaching in the service of social justice, for all of us to be free.
